Honestly, I think Lucas was harping back to the (admittedly racist) movie stereotypes of his youth — Ming the merciless, Heckle & Jeckle, etc — in trying to give characters ‘instant recognition.’ But it sure does come across as tone-deaf.
I still love the Star Wars movies. Stereotypes are part of the delightful comic book quality.
