Iraqi Doctors Will be Packing Heat

New York Times article.

Doctors will be permitted to carry guns to protect themselves, the government said Monday. More than 100 doctors have been killed since the 2003 invasion by the United States. The government also ordered the Health Ministry to begin building high-security residential compounds around hospitals for doctors to live in, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s cabinet said in a statement. Iraq is struggling to ease a shortage of medical workers and to lure back thousands of doctors who fled violence in the country. About 8,000 physicians have abandoned jobs at government health centers over the past five years, most having sought refuge abroad.
