Weird News

Every day I read Chuck Shepherd’s News of the Weird. Today he posted two stories that at first seemed awesome for this blog, but then it turned out that the first one is about an Indian Muslim, not an Arab; and the second one is about a Muslim man who may or may not be Arab. However, the stories are juicy enough for me to post them both here, anyway.

Life imitates the Simpsons

In the first one, life imitates a Simpsons episode. Many seasons ago the Flanderses house was destroyed and a distraught Maude Flanders told Marge that Ned doesn’t believe in insurance because he considers it a form of gambling.

In this article from an Indian online newspaper, an Islamic Fiqh Academy (India) has decided that health insurance policies are illegal (according to Shariah law) for Muslims, because they are just another way of gambling.

So I have one extra wife, what is that–a crime?

This one is just stupid. A man in Scotland, whose ethnic origin is not mentioned, but who is a Muslim, successfully argued his way out of driver’s license suspension on the grounds that he has to drive more than double the speed limit, recklessly endangering lives, in order to commute between his business and the homes of his two wives.

Airdrie Sheriff Court had heard that Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification.

Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence.

Instead, he was fined £200 and given six penalty points.

Lorna Jackson, from the road safety charity Brake, called the decision “astonishing”.

She said: “Regardless of the number of wives or businesses this man drives to, he broke a law which is there to protect everyone.

“Travelling just a few miles over the limit in a 30mph zone can be the difference between life and death if you hit someone, let alone driving at more than twice the speed limit.

“Drivers know the law, and they know the punishment they could face when they break it.

“For the courts to allow someone to keep their licence when they have so blatantly flouted the law and put peoples’ lives at risk, on the basis of an excuse such as this, is astonishing.”

Chuck Shepherd needs people to click on his site, so please consider clicking over there and taking a look. Thanks
