The Qatif Girl rape case has come to a close. Saudi Arabia’s king has pardoned her, so she doesn’t have to undergo the 200 lashes she was sentenced to.

Three judges from the Qatif General Court sentenced the rape victim to 90 lashes for being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape, committing “isolation” (khulwa). It is illegal in Saudi Arabia for women to mingle with unrelated men in the absence of their legal male guardian.
There’s nothing new here, it’s just background on the case, but I get really steamed at the idea of a grown woman needing a legal male guardian. The very idea.
